Garden Tips for winter

Gardens are beautiful places to be when your vegetables glow in their natural green colors, flowers blooms and show their lovely flowers, and lots more, however, making the garden even much more appreciable when winter comes is a top priority.

There are some certain things that you should always do when it is winter so that you can be assured of the survival and productivity of the garden plants. Below are some garden tips that must be put in place during winter:

Plant protection:

When it is winter, plants need to be protected and secured even more than they ever were. During this period of the year, road salts can be a dangerous material as they have the potential of damaging the plants and soil on which they are grown.

The presence of salt causes an increase in soil salinity and this will have an adverse effect on the survival of the plants especially small, tender plants root and their foliage.

Also, if you have any plant that is grown along the roadside, you might want to keep it safe from salt spray.

You should make a wooden fence around the garden to prevent the plants from salt splash and ensure that they are always protected from it.

In places where fencing is impossible, you can make use of chemicals that can melt salts such as Calcium chloride and Magnesium chloride or you grow salt-resistant plants from the beginning of the season.

The plants can also be protected from the harsh weather by making use of different plants cover so as to reduce the level of damage that the plant will be faced with. This does not require any special skill, just leave the cover until spring arrives and remove it.

Make your own compost bin:

Composting is a very good way to always get ready for the growing season but you don’t really need to purchase a new compost bin; just make one for yourself.

Most garden centers do make use of wooden pallets and in most cases cannot finish using them; so pay a visit and ask for some.

With these wooden pallets, you can then build your own compost bin and it could be one-sided or three-sided type depending on your choice and you can then join it together with any suitable adhesive.

Place the compost bin in a place that is well exposed to the sun and this will increase the rate of decomposition of the compost materials.

Remove dead trees:

Dead trees make the environment look untidy and unpleasant to the eye. If you have any dead tree in your garden and you do not know what to do with it, winter can be the best time to remove such trees and totally get rid of them.

The removal of trees does require the attention of experts and you might want to learn more about removing trees from those who have the right experience before replicating it on your garden. This can as well be the best time to prune out dead plants part that no longer grows.

Pay attention to the winter crops:

There are plants that can grow under harsh environmental conditions, yet there is always going to be a need for you to pay attention to these crops.

Snows, when too heavy, have the potential of damaging the structure of plants and it can also prevent sunlight from reaching the plant.

You must always look after the plants and in cases when the plant is covered with snow, you should use a sturdy broom or plastic shovel to get rid of it.

You should always make sure that anything that can bring damage to any of the winter crops that you have in your garden during the season.

Make the necessary preparation for a new garden:

The best time to plan ahead for a new garden is during winter – you do not have to wait till spring before you prepare.

After getting rid of the dead trees and putting your garden in the right shape for winter, it is now the right time for you to get rid of the unnecessary weeds.

You should place a thick layer of newspaper or cardboard over the area where the weeds can be found and then pile on alternating layers of organic materials which will indirectly cause the death of the weeds underneath.

This will ensure that the garden is well prepared for making the necessary garden beds that are required for planting.

The right time to get rid of the weed is during early winter when the seeds get spread around the garden and you can as well remove the weeds by carefully digging up the plant.

Below are some ways through which you can prepare for the next growing season during winter:

Get accustomed to gardening: you should get the necessary information by reading magazines, seed catalogs, and other gardening books that you have lying around.

Maintenance of tools: the tools that are to be used for gardening must be well maintained and this involves sharpening, lubricating, and repairing them when the need arises.

Give proper check: implements such as the lawn mower should be checked for potential damages such as rust.

Inspect the water transport system: hoses, sprinklers, and caps are part of the water system and you must always look into them if they have been damaged in any way or not.

Take proper inventory record: all inventory of gardening materials such as mulches, fertilizers, etc. must be noted.

Make the necessary order: if there is anything you need for the coming season, this resting phase is the right time to make the necessary calls so as to ensure that you get what you really want and plan for.
