When is the right time to grow cauliflowers?

Growing cauliflowers can be a challenging thing to engage in if you are not well grounded with the understanding of this plant.

Cauliflowers are very specific plants when it relates to temperature preference and they thrive best when the temperature is between 60 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit; at a temperature above 70 degrees Fahrenheit the plant cannot survive.

Before going through the steps involved in growing cauliflowers, we will discuss the perfect time when growing should be done i.e. learning the best time to propagate cauliflowers.

The best period for growing cauliflowers is during spring; however, they will also grow in fall. Below are the right times when cauliflowers can be grown:

Fall:

Even though it might be a little bit warm during this period, planting of your cauliflower plant can start during this period when the temperature is less than 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

This should be done about two weeks (not less or more than that) to the first fall frost date so that the plant can have a stable root.

Seeds should have been propagated indoors about 8 – 12 weeks ahead of the first fall frost date so as to have a plant suitable for transplanting.

Spring:

Cauliflowers can also be properly planted just after the last winter frost, during this period the soil will still be cool and this will enhance the development of the plant.

During this period, the cauliflower plant will be able to receive enough sunlight during the day as they thrive well under the full sun while the soil temperature is cool.

NB: there are varieties of this plant that have been developed to thrive in warmer conditions so you can choose from them if your environment is not so cool.

How to Grow Cauliflowers

Growing your own edible vegetables can be a great deal especially when it is something you love – you will definitely want to give it your all.

There are some simple and easy-to-go ways in which you can grow cauliflowers and when doing this make sure you follow the instructions to letter.

In this section of the article, we will take you through the steps involved in growing Cauliflowers. Have a great time reading!

Choose cool weather:

The time when planting should be carried out is very paramount and choose a planting period when the temperature will be around 60 – 65 degrees Fahrenheit.

However, for gardeners that have a climate that is warm and cool period seems impossible, you should choose a variety that can thrive under warm climate.

Site selection:

Before growing, you need to make sure that you have a site that will allow for the proper development of this plant.

The growing site should receive at least 6 hours of sunlight daily and the soil at the site must be well-draining. Make sure to avoid places that have shades generally as this can prevent the proper germination of the plant.

Prepare the soil:

The soil at the selected site must be rich in organic matter, making it easier for the plant to hold moisture for long. Make sure to check the soil pH and make sure it lies within 6.5 and 7.0; they generally thrive well in acidic soil.

Check for the nutrient availability of the soil; specifically, nitrogen and potassium as they ensure the development of cauliflowers – make sure that the soil is high in these nutrients.

A soil that lacks in any of these should be amended and you can apply fertilizer or manure to improve the soil quality and make sure that the pH is in the required range.

Start seed indoors:

Since this plant is usually affected by the weather, it is important to think of a way to grow your plant without exposing it to too much stress. To start your plants indoors, these are the steps to follow:

Plant in a paper cup:

Fill a paper cup with peat and soil and make a hole for planting the seed. Place the seed in the hole not more than ½ inches and properly cover it up. Just a seed should be planted in a single cup.

Water regularly:

Make sure that the soil is well watered and kept moist. Avoid adding too much water.

Allow to reach about 2 inches high:

Once the plant has begun to germinate, look out for the plant and make sure that it has three to four true leaves on it.

NB: if you are planning to purchase seedlings this step is not recommended. However, allow the plant to germinate well indoors before transplanting to the garden.

Harden off the seedling:

Just before transplanting your plant should be accustomed to the environment. You should move the plant outside for an hour, and then the exposure period should be increased over the course of a week to increase the ability of this plant to survive. This process is known as “hardening off” and it is very essential for the plant’s survival.

Transplant the seedling:

After hardening off, the plant should then be carefully transplanted to the growing spots. Make a hole not deeper than the height of the paper cup and gently placed the seedling with the paper cup.

The paper cup is degradable and it should be covered with the plant root. Cover the plant’s root with soil and make a saucer-like depression around the plant base so as to help retain water.

Water regularly:

Water is essential for all plant types and it should always be provided to your plant at all times. Supply water to the base of the plant to ensure efficient growth and development of the seedling.

About 1 to 1.5 inches of water weekly is efficient and rainfall will also help moisten the soil sometimes. Just make sure that the soil is always moist.

Practice mulching:

A light layer of mulch around the base of the cauliflower seedling will be spectacular at helping to retain moisture and also regulate soil temperature. Make sure that the soil temperature is always favorable for proper germination.

Prevent from pest:

Young cauliflower seedlings are highly susceptible to pest infestation and you should put in place structures that will help get rid of them. You can use old milk jugs to prevent pests by cutting them in half and laying them over the seedlings.

Practice blanching:

When your cauliflower plant begins to grow small white heads, it is important to blanch it to avoid discoloration over time.

The leaves should be bent and carefully placed over the head together and they should be tied with twine or rubber band to hold them in place. When you want to do this make sure that the head is dry and there is enough space for air circulation.

Allow the head to grow bigger:

After blanching has been done, you should then wait days or weeks for the head to grow bigger so that it can be harvested. The time it takes to mature depends on the plant variety so you should be watchful of your plant.

Conclusion

Growing your own cauliflower plant is a way to test your gardening skills and also make yourself happy. Enjoy growing your cute veggie with so much ease. Happy gardening!
