How to Grow a Ficus tree

Growing a ficus tree does not have to be all stressful and demanding, however, with the right and proper steps and guides you will be able to grow your plant with much ease.

There are simple, convenient steps that can be followed to grow ficus trees and this will be carefully and succinctly discussed in this section. Kindly read further to learn more.

Select a healthy established ficus tree:

The first thing to do when it comes to growing a fig tree is choosing a healthy plant. The plant from which the sprig or cutting is to be removed must be healthy and should have branches that are free from diseases and damages.

Make a cut:

After choosing a perfect ficus tree, look for a healthy sprig on the plant. After deciding on the perfect sprig that you can propagate the next line of action is to cut a sprig that is at least 6 inches long.

The sprig that you choose should not be too old or very young so as to make it easy for the plant to root very well.

The cut should be made just below the leaf node with a sterilized pruning shear as this will ensure a successful propagation.

Remove the leaves at the lower portion:

The leaves at the lower portion of the cutting or removed sprig should be removed. In most instances, it is always very good to remove the leaves leaving a single leaf at the extreme of the sprig.

This will give the plant the chance to focus more of its energy on the development of root. Also, this will help prevent rot and prevent the spread of diseases.

Place in a water jar:

The stem of the cutting should be placed in a water jar (preferably transparent) to make it easy to observe the plant.

While in water the plant should be placed in a place that is warm, bright and slightly humid; however, never should you place in full sunlight. The water should be changed either once or twice a week.

Allow the cutting to root:

After the plant has been placed in water and sited at the right position the next thing to do is allow the plant root for about two to three weeks.

Once the root has begun to form you should prepare to plant them in the soil to enhance their growth and development.

Prepare the soiling mixture:

You should prepare a growing mixture that will allow for the growth of the ficus tree in a 4-inch pot. The soiling mixture should have loamy soil with a high-quality potting mix that will support the plants’ growth.

You can also use a mix that is high in peat and it must be well watered to prevent it from getting compacted.

Transplant the rooted cutting:

A small hole should be made at the center of the pot and the cutting should be carefully placed in an upright position.

After careful placement, the plant base should be covered so as to keep the plant in place. Make sure that the soiling mixture is of good texture so as to allow the easy penetration and movement of the roots.

Water the plant after transplanting:

Water the ficus tree very well after it has been transplanted as they need it for their survival. Keep the plant watered at all times and do not allow the soil to get dried over the weeks after the plant has been introduced to a new space.

Leave the plant in a bright location:

The transplanted ficus tree should be left in a warm location that enjoys brightness. Do not allow the transplanted ficus tree to be exposed to direct sunlight as this can damage it before maturing very well. Keep the plant safe and protected in a place with filtered sunlight.

NB: Make sure that the ficus tree is placed in a place that is very bright but not exposes to too much sunlight. This will give the plant to establish itself more and exposing it can cause leaf burn.

Always water the plant:

When growing ficus trees do not allow the soil to dry off as this can damage the whole plant. The plant should be supplied with water at all times and once the top region of the soil s dried up it is recommended to water.

You can check the water level by using your finger or a pencil to know if watering is necessary or required.

NB: Do not overwater as this can lead to leaf browning or leaf curl and you should allow the soil to dry out very well during winter before watering.

Harden off the plant:

Once the plant has grown well and is ready for growing outside, the next line of action is to harden off the plant.

The young plant should be acclimated bit by bit by exposing it gradually to sunlight for a very short period of time and increasing its exposure over the course of two weeks. This will give the plant the chance to be able to thrive when grown outside.

Prepare the planting site:

The site chosen must be one that is exposed to bright filtered sunlight and the soil in the location should be improved in fertility by adding organic humus materials.

Materials such as compost, manure, coarse sand will help to improve the soil structure and drainage. Dig a hole that is of equal depth with the root ball and about three times the width for the best development.

Plant the ficus tree:

The ficus tree should be carefully handled when doing this. The developing ficus tree should be removed from the container by using a knife to release the soil from the sides.

After removal, the ficus tree should be placed in the hole and the root ball must be at the same level as the ground level. The hole should then be covered with the amended soil.

Stake the Tree:

A stake that is about 18 inches deep should be driven into the ground. This will help to provide the necessary support to the plant as it becomes established.

Practice mulching:

The region where the plant is being grown should be mulched to a height of about 4-inches above the ground surface to prevent loss of soil moisture.

As a guide, do not allow the mulch to touch the base of the plant as this can expose the plant to infestation and diseases.

Provide with water and fertilizer:

The plant should be watered regularly preferably once a week and you should always keep the soil moist. You can add a water-soluble fertilizer once in a month to supply needed nutrients for its growth.

Conclusion

Growing ficus trees is a very simple and easy activity to engage in although it is time-consuming and requires a lot of care. Nevertheless, you will certainly enjoy growing your own ficus tree by following the above-mentioned steps.
