How to Care for Your Indoor Plants

Allowing your plant to get the right care does not require much of strength but all you need do is make sure that the little care you give is adequate, effective, and efficient.

Below are the ways through which you can give proper care to your indoor plants.

Giving adequate and regular water.

Make sure that the soil is moist and not wet. Water is an essential component of plant growth and development and all plants require water for their various activities.

Not all plants require much water so it is important that you know the nature of the plant that you have with you and the amount of water you give must be sufficient.

You should not allow the soil to be either too dried or heavily watered as they can have an adverse effect on the plant and this could prevent their growth.

You should know that each indoor plant varies and they have a different rate at which they absorb water. Below are some of the ways to know the true condition of your plant in relation to water availability.

If the soil cracks, this is a sign of dried soil, you should water it.

The presence of mold on the surface of the soil or the presence of excess water at the container’s bottom is a sign of overwatering. You should drain excess water from the pot to allow for proper growth and development.

Succulent plants are known to experience dryness between watering.

Always determine the rate of watering

As much as watering your plant is important, there are other practices that can help us to determine how much water is present in the soil, if enough or not, and in case it is too much.

You can determine the rate at which you have watered by dipping your finger into the soil till it reaches your knuckle.

If you feel that the soil is damp, this is a sign that the soil is well-watered, however, if the soil feels dry, this is a sign that the soil needs more water.

You must know that not all plant’s water content can be determined using this means.

You should pay attention to the plant itself and look for signs of over-hydration and dehydration.

Signs of over-hydration include discolored leaves, loss of leaves, lack of leaf growth, and brown leaves.

Signs of dehydration also must be well studied such as brown or dried leaf edges, chlorosis and leaf curl, and slow leaf growth.

Use water that is at room temperature

The temperature of the water that you use for watering also has a great effect on the plant’s growth. The best temperature at which water to be used for watering should be is at 20 degrees centigrade.

You should have a hand thermometer that you can conveniently use to determine the temperature of the water or you can as well leave the water outside under the sun to allow it to attain room temperature.

You must make sure that the water is not too hot so as to avoid root damage as well as some effects which could kill the plant.

Also, the water must not be too cold so as to avoid plant becoming dormant.

Determination of the hydration level of the soil

The hydration level of the soil can be accurately determined with the use of a moisture meter and they help to determine how hydrated the plants are.

This helps us to determine the moisture content that we have in plant and the mechanism involved probes the underlying soil. This will help you to know how rich the plant is in moisture.

The pot used must have good drainage

Another way to ensure proper care of the plants that you grow indoors include the use of pots that are of good drainage.

The amount of drainage in your pot is very important because over or under watering will damage the plant and creating holes in the bottom of the pot can help to ensure drainage.

There are different materials that can be used for potting such as plastics, metal, glass, ceramics, etc. You should know that clay pots absorb more water so you should put that in mind.

Ensure the use of a material that can be perforated, and in case you are using a material that has no hole, do not water too much and make sure that the water is at an optimum level.

Ensure that sufficient sunlight is available to the Plant

Choose an area that gets sunlight easily

Sunlight is an important factor needed by plants for proper growth and development and it is also important for photosynthesis.

Not all plants require too much sunlight, for example, succulent plants may be able to withstand much sunlight but other leafy plants can just require few hours of sunlight.

If the plant is a flowering plant, you should expose them to sunlight for about 12 – 16 hours and foliage plants should have access to 14 – 16 hours light.

Avoid moving plants around

Moving plants around can also affect the proper growth and development of the plants. Plants are also living things and they usually try as much as possible to adapt to wherever they are grown and they tend to acclimate themselves.

There is also a possibility that there will be a change in the temperature of the environment which can affect the plant drastically.

If you are moving a plant from a well-shaded place to a place with abundant sunlight, this can have an adverse effect on the plant.

If you want to make such changes, you should expose the plant to the sun at a rate of 1hr on daily basis and you should increase it slowly until you know that they can withstand a longer light exposure.

Increase your room humidity

The amount of humidity that plants can be exposed to varies, as much as some plants can withstand dry air some of these plants require a humid environment for their proper growth and development.

To improve the humidity of the environment you can purchase a room humidifier which will help to boost the moisture level of the room.

You should make sure that the plant’s foliage or flower is not wet. When you see wilting or brown leaves this can be seen as a sign that your plant is suffering from low humidity.

You should add mist to the humidifier to help boost your plant’s humidity. You can also raise the humidity of the plant by growing them in groups.

Add fertilizer to your soil from time to time

You can boost the growth of your plant by adding NPK 10-10-10 fertilizer to the soil.

This will help boost the number of nutrients that will be made available to the soil and the essential nutrients needed by this plant will be made available.

Practice regular pruning

You need to have a well-detailed idea of your plant and you must know the required period needed to make the necessary changes in the physiology of your plant.

Pruning your plant will help you to keep your plant healthy and safe at all times. This can also help you to prevent yourself from replanting.

Prevent contaminant from getting into the houseplant

You should avoid contaminating your plant. Anything that has sugar such coffee or any other drink can attract insects which can destroy the plant as a whole.

Knowing your Plants well

Having the required knowledge of your plant, the plant classification and you must determine if the plant is green or not, and you need to find a plant that is easy for you and one that you can take care of them well.

Conclusion

Taking proper care of your plant is one of the most important things that you need to do and you must be able to give proper care and maintenance to the plant.

Having the perfect understanding of this plant is of great essence so you should care for them well.
